Quality and Environmental Management

Our aim is to pursue a "zero defect strategy" in order to meet our customers' high quality requirements, as well as minimizing environmental impact.

We realise that the transport of goods involves environmental impact, yet in a globalized economy with its division of labour the exchange of goods is essential. Environmental protection and global trade are not, however, mutually exclusive. We always aim to minimize environmental impact for the services that we provide as Hapag-Lloyd.

Hapag-Lloyd is concerned to ensure that its modern containerships are always state-of-the-art and thereby practise active environmental protection. Our vessels are equipped with modern engines that make a special contribution to reducing consumption of heavy oil and thus also emissions.

Hapag-Lloyd has opted for the installation of engines with electronic injection and valve control in its new 8,749 TEU containerships, being the first shipping line to use engines of this size with such advanced technology. In 2005 the group completed its transition to tributyltin-(TBT)free underwater paints and received "TBT-free" certificates for its entire fleet, long before these become mandatory in container shipping. Shipboard waste separation has already been practised on our ships for a long time.

Since mid-2003, the quality and environmental management system of Hapag-Lloyd has been certified in accordance with the new quality standard ISO 9001 and the environmental standard ISO 14001. The company thus now offers customers verifiable criteria in the quality and environment areas, covering all activities along the transport chain from sender to recipient. In feeder services with seaports, the aim is to cooperate with customers to provide solutions that give preference to environment-friendly means of transport such as rail, inland waterway vessel or feeder over road transport. Our yield management reduces the number of empty containers requiring transport.
